I are very rarely moved to write reviews. This time I am prompted to do so because of a product that not only met, but exceeded my expectations.
br /
br /My needs are simple: I film my kids' performances at school, I film birthday parties at home, I film some family stuff (not a lot) on vacation. I was looking for:
br /* No moving parts -- no tapes, no HDD, no DVD's memory-only.
br /* Long battery life
br /* Light weight
br /* Ease of use
br /* Good indoor/low light filming
br /* Good image stabilization
br /* Simple connection to to the computer via standard USB cable
br /* Simple DVD burning
br /
br /I was NOT looking for:
br /* Professional (or even advanced) editing capabilities
br /* Professional quality video
br /* Digital camera capabilities (I already have an excellent digital camera, thank you)
br /
br /This camcorder is extraordinarily light (.6 lbs!), has an excellent big screen, and is astoundingly easy to use. The first day I got it, I opened up the manual to figure out how to install the battery and memory card, but after that I haven't needed to crack the manual at all. I *love* the one-button battery level check features -- and yes, the battery time is a true 2-hours plus, as rated.
br /
br /I do not have a lot of experience with different types of camcorders, but the video quality on this one far exceeds my newly retired 2 year old Hi8 model. After a lot of research, I bought this camera instead of an HD model because the current crop of HD camcorders seem to have a lot of issues with battery life, and also weigh twice as much as this one.
br /
br /So at this price, I can certainly afford to let the manufacturers keep improving the HD models, and I'll happily use this for a year or so.
br /
br /All told, a great camcorder that I've been very happy with.

This is my first video recorder of any type, and after reading several reviews I had some concerns. However, having used the camera a few times I am pleasantly surprised. So far all is well, but here are a few points:
br /
br /1. Some retailers sell the camera with a memory card, and others do not. I originally ordered one from an online retailer who then called to sell me accessories like long-life batteries and SD cards, even though Samsung's description clearly states the camera comes with these items. I canceled that order and bought the camera somewhere else, and the "extra" items were already included.
br /
br /2. The camera came with a 512mb SD card that will record about 35 minutes of video at the lowest quality setting, or 14 minutes at the highest setting. Since the camera works well I will now get a 4mb card for more storage time.
br /
br /3. I had great results from the image stabilization, and recorded my son's soccer game (parts of it, anyway) with no blurring and limited shaking even though I held the camera throughout.
br /
br /4. The camera has many environment settings (indoor, outdoor, sports events, etc) that will help control exposure and focus settings, etc. I had no trouble working through the menus once I learned how to navigate.
br /
br /5. As another review here mentioned, the included battery lasts 2 hours or more with a full charge, contrary to the claims of the retailer I originally ordered from. BE VERY CAREFUL... THIS GUY TOLD ME THE CAMERA WOULD NOT WORK IF I DIDN'T ORDER THIS EXTRA STUFF, AND BECAME IRATE WHEN I STOOD MY GROUND!
br /
br /6. The included "video editing software" is pretty useless, in my opinion, but I am sure there are plenty of options available if you want to edit your videos. My needs just aren't that great.
br /
br /Honestly, this seems to be a great camera. If I run into problems with reliability or performance I will update my review. I would not hesitate to recommend this camera to anyone who does not expect professional results.

Pay twice as much, buy a sony or some other brand camera that has a harddrive or dvd, and you will get a picture that looks about the same. Everyhting else being equel this is a great camera. It's no stunner to be sure, but almost none of the single chip under 1000 dollar cameras are.
br /
br /At it's highest image quality setting you get about 2 hours on a 4 gig card, shadows can have a few compression artifacts but most of the single image chip harddrive or DVD cameras do as well. The difference being those kinds of cameras cost alot more. This is about as cheap as video camera's get, but it has no moving parts to break (other than the zoom) and it has a great 34x optical zoom, decent picture in bright light, and it's easy to use. Download the AVI files into your computer, burn it to DVD and repeat. What's not to like?

I address this review to Mr Brown above who appears to have had a bad shake with this little camera, and to anybody else who has had problems with it, or have been influenced by such reports.
br /
br /I am not an expert, this is my first Camcorder, and the only other video recording I have done is with a Kodak digital camera which makes Quicktime video clips. And I add here that I had to buy something else to make clips because my Computer would not edit Kodak .mov files.
br /
br /With this product you must follow the instructions in the User Manual to the letter, and that includes charging the main battery when instructed to do so, P 18. Yes the manual is long winded and goes on about things you don't really need to know as you work through the preparation pages.
br /
br /But, work through them you must in order to get the essential preparation done. Nowhere is that more needed than inserting the little 'button battery", P 20, into its slot so that the SC MX 10 can REMEMBER the date, time and settings you elect in the menu screens.
br /
br /The camera in the box is beautifully presented with all the things needed to get started right away. However, the Quick Start Guide seems to me, P 2 to have two panels of instruction for the same thing, battery installation, but non a word about the Button battery.
br /
br /Could it be that the typesetter and/or TW team made a mistake here?
br /
br /You have to leave the MX 10 on charge for about an hour, then the little orange light changes to green indicating charging is complete.
br /
br /Next after inserting the Button Battery, P 20 User Manual, I installed the supplied memory card, a Sandisk SC 512 MB card. P 33 User Manual and P 3 Quick Start Guide.
br /
br /I next ran through setting up the date/time by starting the Camera with the 'power on' button, see Quick Start Guide P 5.
br /
br /However, I thought that a few minutes playing around with our Kodak digital camera on video was training enough for me, but of course I was mad wrong about that one!
br /
br /The MX 10 Quick Start booklet suggests just jumping in feet first, OK get soaked if you want, but there is an easier way! ... lol that's where this little Camcorder really takes the prize. Samsung has provided one button for novices like me, and I should really have pushed that when I went 'a videoing'. Located beneath the 'Mode' button it is called the 'Easy.Q' button, and it works well for such as myself.
br /
br /My first videos were, as I already said, badly done because I haven't a clue about such things as 'back lighting', 'anti-shake' or 'portrait' settings etc etc, all I know is turn it on, point it at something and press record. Later I tried just one little Easy.Q clip and it was perfect for the overcast weather we had here today.
br /
br /I don't need or use TV or Plasma Screens at all, so the S Video is wasted on me. But, I do use a Computer, so I installed all the software on my upgraded 3 year old HP Pavillion with no problem at all. The video editor rocks! It supplements my freebie from PNY, muvee_AutoProducer and XP native MS Movie Maker, adding other effects that I did not already have.
br /
br /I have a card reader on the network, so removing the memory card from the powered off camera, I loaded that into the reader and hey presto XP opened the device as a USB drive, and after poking around in the folders there I soon found the video clips! A word of warning, besides viewing the clips on the memory card in the camera on you Computer do not do anything else to them. Don't rename or move files on it, don't mess with other properties either. It repeats this warning time and again in the User Manual and there is a very good reason for it, that is your MX10 may malfunction.
br /
br /Still I wanted to check out the USB thing and did that as well, it works in the same way, but the nice thing in this case is that you don't have to turn off the MX 10 while downloading clips like you would if you removed the memory card.
br /
br /Six of one and half a dozen of the other! Which ever works best.
br /
br /The quality is way out there for a Camcorder selling around $200, and at max resolution it performs really well. However I like to send videos by email, as well as edit them before sending and that again is where this little Camcorder takes first prize. At the lowest settings, file sizes are small but the image is still great in XP.
br /
br /All in all for the price and convenience of this product and with a little care setting it up, today there isn't anything on the market even near it for excellence.
br /
br /Update: I talked to the sales person where I bought the SC MX10 and was assured that Samsung would be notified about the typos in the Quick Start Guide!
br /
br /Also I got a 4 Gig SD SC card by Sandisk, as recommended in the User Manual, and it works even better than the supplied card, BTW these SD and SC cards are a different format! The SC grade is much faster in every way and it is most noticeable when copying files to the computer off of it. With the standard SD it takes a little while, with SD SC it is almost instant.
br /
br /2nd Update:
br /
br /January 5th 2008.
br /
br /After using the MX 10 to make several little movies I realized just how user friendly this little camera is, and on buying it I never gave a thought to the magnificent 32X optical zoom on the camera. Adding the memory card technology is icing on the cake for what has to be the future of camcorders!
br /
br /If you need something to collect clips with information in them and/or to email, and you do not want state of the art HD footage, nor the expensive and space gobbling technology to support that, then this is the only thing out there that fits the bill.

OK, now I think I am ready to write a review on MX-10. I've got it for $200, and it is the only reason I did not return it on the next day, but decided to play with it for a while. And you know, I like it! It is small, handy, simple, great zoom, great mic, looks and feels solid, great battery life, can record almost 2 hours on my 4GB card using max resolution (SuperFine, 16X9). The camcorder itself is OK; it is the software that comes with it, ruins it! I made my first video clip using Power Director (from CD that came with camera), and was shocked about the bad quality of the video. Just thought: "It cannot be like that!", and plugged my MX-10 directly to TV. What I got was completely different picture. Still, not excellent, but waaaaaaaay better! So, I decided to change software, and made a sample video using Roxio Media Creator. The result was significantly different, much better. So, I decided to keep the camera, in spite of it's drawbacks: slow autofocus, and average color quality. Also, you can't delete the the clips you don't like. You must use your computer, or format the card completely. However, there are too many good things to say about MX-10, which can't be ignored. I rate it 4 stars, but gave 3 only because of my feelings towards the original software. P.S. Gorillacables send items incredibly fast.

I got this camera just a few weeks ago and have already made a few hours worth of films. It is small and very light and seems designed to fit a woman's hand. It is very easy to operate and the menus are detailed and easily navigated.
br /
br /It is quick one button on, push to record - so I can grab it and catch the dogs or kids as they are playing - there is no setup time. It is even small enough to fit in your purse!
br /
br /I don't understand some of the poorer reviews - some say the footage is pixelated - I have not experienced this at all and the zoom quality is great - you can choose manual or digital. As far as some people complaining about memory and battery life: memory is really in your own hands - try to figure out what size and/or how many sd cards you will use. I am just using a very small (2g) card and transferring the footage to my hard drive, then wiping the card. The flip-out screen gives a clear representation of both film storage and battery life remaining - so just plug it in for a short time to recharge it. I tend to think some of the more negative reviews reflect the skills/quality of the user, not the product.
br /
br /I am very happy with this and really enjoy using the film editing software that came with it, as well. I recommend it for anyone who wants an inexpensive, quick easy to use, lightweight camcorder for recording those spur-of-the-moment happenings as well as those family trips!

I got this camera for my 12 year old son for Christmas and he loves it. Christmas day was a little intense because it wouldn't work well with imovie 08.It had to go through flash focus before it went into 08 and then the picture wasn't very good. We found there were problems inherent in imovie 08 and switched to 06 which is actually better and all is fine. I'm just glad my computer engineer brother was here to help us figure it out.The camera is a great size, easy to use, and for the price does a nice video. For anyone looking for a camera to use with the imac I can say this one does work well.

This camcorder lived up to it's billing and I am happy with it. Easy to use, good video quality, easy to transfer from SDs to computer for sharing. Extremely small and lightweight. While it is difficult to see the image in the LCD screen in bright sunlight (camcorder has no view finder), I anticipated this and it is rare that I video outdoors in bright sunlight.

I dont know what these other people are talking about. I love this camcorder. It has good picture quality, great sound, great zoom, easy to use, compact, and sturdy. The picture quality looks bad on the LCD screen only. Once you plug it in to your TV or computer, it isnt as pixel-y as on the LCD screen. I dont have 1 complaint for this product. I recommend it to every one. Dont listen to what the other guys tell you.

I owned this item for about a week before I returned it. I really liked the size and shape of the camcorder -- it was comfortable to hold for long periods. I also thought it was attractively designed. Also, it was extremely easy to operate, and it was easy to transfer video to my computer. Finally, the battery life is excellent for a camcorder; I got about two hours of use out of one charge.
br /
br /That said, I decided that the video quality wasn't satisfactory for my purposes. I mainly wanted to use my camcorder to take outdoor videos when I'm hiking -- close-ups of birds, insects, etc. With this camera, the images are quite grainy even at the highest-quality setting. In many situations the grain gives a purplish cast to the images. Also, the 34X zoom is what really made this camcorder more appealing than comparably priced items. But in many cases the zoom resulted in a purplish halo around images -- for me, this really detracted from the value of the camera.
br /
br /I returned the camcorder because I found a Panasonic SDR-S150 for about $150 more. It's an older flash-based model that records much higher-quality video, plus it can take still pictures and has more manual controls. I'm much happier with this camera, as I think most people would be for the difference in price.
br /
br /But I think that a lot of people would like the Samsung. Again, it's well designed and easy to use. The video quality really isn't that bad considering how inexpensive it is, and if you're on a very tight budget you could still have a lot of fun with this item and take tolerable-looking videos. In fact, some people might find that the grainy images have a certain humble charm to them. It probably beats using a still camera that happens to record short videos, or using a cellphone video camera, or one of those cheap rectangular camcorders they sell at CVS.

I needed a video camera for a trip and didn't want to be ripped off by todays prices. I found the SC-MX10 and read reviews about it but every review said something different. I used this video camera for three weeks and this is what I found.
br /
br /The first thing I came across was that the charge time is a serious problem. There is a amber led that blinks when charging which is suppose to change to a solid green when fully charged. I had it charging for two full days and never saw a green light but the battery indicater showed full on the display. Even though I never knew if my battery was fully charged the record time was ok.
br /
br /The second problem I noticed is that recording quality is not for vacationing or home video. Picture quality is grainy and the more zoom the more grainy and at full zoom, unless you can stand like a statue it is useless. Tripod only. There is a setting for low light but does not help picture quality.
br /
br /Another problem is putting recorded files on disk using a computer. If you don't use their software you can't do things like burn a disk which I needed to do on my vaction so I had to delete some files or purchase a over priced memory card.
br /
br /The plus side is operation is easy with on screen display the size is awesome, fits in hand well and hand grip rotates. The display rotates in every direction and flips image when rotated 180 degrees. It's a great toy for catching fun moments. Worth the price? So so, don't pay more then low 200's.

The camera itself is fine, but it records in a Samsung proprietary mpeg4 format. This means that you can edit your output only with the Samsung/Cyberlink software, which is vastly inferior to the video editing software available from other companies. This incompatibility means that you become a prisoner to Samsung. I have communicated with Samsung's customer service on this topic, and they do not offer any solution to solve the incompatibility. Conversely, the purveyors of better editing software (e.g. Sony Vegas) apologize for the fact that Samsung deliberately makes it impossible for their programs to accept Samsung input.

Shame on folks complaining about this camera. For its price, it's darn near perfect. Small, light, expandable memory, holds a charge, and does what it should. Set the anti-shake to "on" and you're good to go. If your videos are junk, blame the person behind the camera. We just took it, fresh out of the box, to catch precious memories in Memphis, for Elvis Week. I got more than I expected, especially after reading these reviews prior to our trip. I took videos while driving, and they look just fine! Night time, while walking down Beale at night was a little rough, but it was MY fault. I knew enough to slow down. But even those aren't awful. 99% were what I expected or better. If you spend any time on YouTube, you know what junk looks like. This isn't it. If you want a vacation camera, you can't go wrong with this one. It's so light and small, and is priced quite nicely. Just make certain that you set the anti-shake and buy a large memory card. (But don't try to bring your vacation home with you. Be in the moment. Use it to get moving snapshots or folks talking. Don't try to keep it rolling 75% of the time, otherwise you'll personally miss the moment as it happens, plus you'll bore the crap out of your friends and family.) Love it!!!

Its so easy to use. Not everybody is a techno-wizard !! I only needed to glance at the quick start guide. The options/setup menu is a breeze. Picture, sound and features are more than adequate. I chose Flash Memory card over tape/dvd as its so compact. With fewer moving parts the camera is less likely to need repair and the battery life is longer. Also I can easily mail a card to friends/relatives abroad and not have to worry about different TV systems or DVD region codes !
br /For me Samsung have produced a winner

The camera has different image resolution settings, on the default (480i) setting, the image quality is terrible, but if you switch to 480p, the image becomes average quality, and the digital blocky artifacts disappear. I am not sure why Samsung (a great company) would mess up the 480i option, then use it as default in a shipping product, but if you switch to 480p all is well.
br /
br /The zoom is great, the camera seems a bit low on settings, but its compact, lightweight, and records to mpeg4. You will need to download the Samsung codec from Samsung's website, but then its easy to transfer files from the SD card, play them in Windows Media Player, manipulate them in your favorite software, etc.
br /
br /My primary intention for this camera was to install it on a roll bar in a sportscar, for this purpose, it uses flash memory, few moving parts, the zoom is actually not important, but sound quality is good, and in 'action' setting, with 480p resolution selected, image quality is good. I wish it came with a remote control, but its a simple process to press the record button.
br /
br /The camera comes with a 512MB card, good for approx 15 minutes of 'high quality' video, and supports up to an 8GB SD card. I purchased a 4GB SD card, which is good for 120 minutes of video, as that is how long the battery lasts, 2 hours.

If you are looking for a camera with "true" 16:9 recording capability **DO NOT BUY THIS CAMERA** as the 16:9 format is nothing other than stretched out 4:3. I saw someone make this comment and thought it cannot be that big of deal. But then after I shot my first video (and realized the images being recorded are in many cases things you see in person i.e. Kids, Pets etc) and they look nothing like what you know them to look like (unless of course you want to watch your recorded footage in 4:3 which is a complete waste of your investment into an HDTV). If you do not have a 16:9 TV and never plan to get one, this camera, for the money, is tough to beat.
br /

Only thing is you have to spend atleast $50 to get a SD card of 16 Gig atleast (Maybe you can look for some deal and buy it cheaper). It comes with Power Director software for video editing.

Here's what I wanted my video camcorder to be able to do:
br /
br /1. Record high quality without the need for a CD or cassette (its 2008 for goodness sake, moving parts, are you crazy?)
br /2. Had a good amount internal memory as well as a memory card capacity of up to 4gb
br /3. Could be easily played on my HDTV and not look like jumpy and grainy
br /4. Would download clips easily onto my PC so I could edit and send via email to family and friends
br /5. Had easy interface and simple-to-use navigation
br /6. Had good audio quality and anti-shake qualities for smooth shooting
br /7. Had at least 5x zoom ability.
br /8. Was under $250
br /
br /This camera not only met all of my expectations, but exceeded them. It fits and feels nice, shoots very well and when you hook it up to your computer, TV or just want to watch the playback on its 2.7 inch screen, its simple and there's no fuss.
br /
br /If you like quality, but have a budget and you want a video camera that is both easy to use and looks and sounds good (sound is very important to me), then I highly recommend this one.
br /
br /The software that comes with wasn't impressive, but when I editted images on Windows Movie Maker, everything worked great.
br /
br /They say you can tell right away if something is good quality. The second I started reading the manual (and please do), I knew these guys knew how to make a good camera. Thanks Samsung!

br /The normal and fine quality settings both look really bad. The super fine quality setting is decent and performs acceptably in low light when the picture gets grainy. I would consider this to be DVD quality, and would look just fine on a normal television.

br /- Menu navigation can be a bit slow, but is by no means annoying.
br /- You can do a slow zoom using the directional pad on the screen.
br /-There is a bit of DITHER in the audio from, and the STEREO MICs pick up wind.
br /
br /On automatic exposure, I was unable to pick anything up at night, but results are better with the exposure maxed out in manual mode. I don't think this camera is suitable for night filming at all. One can boost the brightness and contrast in a video editor, (I use +.3 brightness and +.7 contrast in Vegas) but the end result is a blocky video.
br /
br /Rewind and fast forward in preview mode are a bit slow and choppy but playback is smooth.
br /
br /I may be selling this and buying a DV camera. With DV, you sacrifice some durability, but you get a better quality in return.

So So camera - Terrible Customer support

The camera itself worked well enough for what I needed it to do....for about three weeks. Then the battery just would not hold a charge. If not plugged into a wall, it would die in seconds. I called the customer support line, waded through the prompts and waited on hold for a tech. We did trouble shooting and they determined that the battery was bad. The tech agreed to send a battery. Three weeks later, no battery. I called to ask about the progress of my order only to be told that I needed to call back when "someone who can help you is working". I made time to call on a weekday and tried my luck again. I invested another hour getting to "executive customer service" only to be told that no order for any battery existed in relation to my first transaction number. The rep I was talking to said he would "try" and get me a battery. I requested that the part be expressed since they admitted that they dropped the ball and was flatly told, "No." It's now two weeks later so I called back one more time only to find the situation unchanged, no order placed for the replacement battery. I am returning the camera and I will never buy Samsung again. Be warned.

Wish I had returned it!

I saw this on HSN before it was released, and I needed a camera for an upcoming trip, so I ordered it. It is compact, easy to operate, and the storage media and battery are internal so they do not make bulk on the outside of the camera. So many vidcams look small, till you get the battery on, and then they really bulk up. This camera is tiny, fits in purse, or very small bag, and is easy to tote around. But after quickly filling up a 4 gig card in Hawaii, and watching the results when I got home, I was disappointed very much. The images were suffering from "digitized", meaning they were blocky-looking. The blocks moved around quite a bit on landscapes, like the auto focus could not find what part of the tree or mountain to focus on. Shots of ocean and beach came out OK, but low-light inside shots were dark. Also, the viewfinder is difficult to see for those of us who need glasses, especially when viewed outdoors. When you go in the menu to change settings, if you turn off the camera, they reset to default when you power back on. I kept setting manual focus, but then after turning the camera off, when I powered up for quick shots, it had reset to auto focus. Auto focus in my opinion is worthless, because the camera takes a few seconds to decide what to focus on, then keeps changing its mind, causing the shot to go in and out of focus. Not a problem with still cameras, but irritating with video. This camera is OK, I am just a video professional, and I expect more than this camera could do.

This camera is really easy to use. The screen is big and clear and the menus easy to follow. The stabilizer works well and very easy with the USB cable to transfer your video to the pc and burn a dvd. It saves the video in AVI format that plays without manipulation on the pc and on compatible dvd players. Highly recommended.

I paid $169 for this digital camcorder and it has features I will probably never use. I read all the pros and cons and realized the cons are all operator head space and timing. Read the directions and this is one great camera.

Ok, I don't typically write product reviews. But this time, I was moved to do so because of my complete disappointment in this particular video camera. I am not a video snob, and I don't typically trust nah-sayers on theses reviews. However, trust the reviewers here. This camera is not good at anything. I really wanted a good camera that uses flash memory to store footage, so I picked the Samsung because of its middle price figuring it couldn't be that bad. The video is completely unacceptable. You will get pixilization in broad daylight with any movement of the camera. Spend your time finding a better choice, I know I will. [...]

I bought this looking for a decent camcorder that I could carry on my motorcycle. I owned it 100 days when it ceased charging the battery. I called Samsung to see if it would be fixed under the warranty. Yeah, right! 90 day warranty! No exceptios! Last Samsung product I'll ever buy!

Not actually 16x9, but stretched 4x3

I bought this camera because although the resolution isn't spectacular, it claimed to shoot in 16x9. Since consumer-level camcorders can't record Discovery-Channel-type HD anyway, I figured this would be a perfect compromise for the price.
br /
br /Near as I can tell, however, the "16x9" mode is just 4x3 *stretched to fill the frame*. This is, of course, absurd. I'd heard it mentioned in other reviews around the web, but assumed that the reviewer had missed a setting somewhere. I can't find it either, and several vaguely-worded statements in the manual lead me to believe it isn't there.
br /
br /That was the single killer feature for me--this camera is unremarkable in every other respect--so I think my two stars are generous. I find it hard to believe that Samsung is actually trying to trick buyers, but I also find it hard to believe that anyone would think this "feature" is useful.

I purchased this camera and was very disappointed. The camera has a very nice compact design but the quality of the image is very poor. I would not recommend it.

I just lost $45 in restocking fee and 10 priceless days worth of memories.
br /This camera is an absolute waist. Don't buy it!
br /Especially dissatisfying is quality of outcome when filming indoors as well as outdoors if conditions are less than ideal (storm, rain, shooting through the window).
br /
br /My still digital camera's movie option produces better video clips.
br /
br /DO NOT BUY IT!

br /When I bought this, I am aware of the average image quality. What I was not aware of is how much accessories cost. I needed an extra battery and you can only buy it direct from Samsung. I searched on EBay and found none.
br /
br /It costs $60 for the battery and shipping. That is 25% of the cost of the camcorder.
br /
br /I feel like I'm being ripped off.
